My ex's best friend's new puppy

[1 minute self development]

So, there I was, trying to be productive.  Trying.  In fact, Facebook had been distracting me big-time, and before I knew it, I was looking at a picture of my ex's best friend's new puppy.

Is this you?  Do you get frustrated by the amount of time you sometimes waste on emails/internet/apps/surfing the web?  If so, read on.

The theme of simplifying life pops up again and again in historical teachings. The nineteenth-century American author and philosopher Henry David Thoreau said:

Our life is frittered away by detail. Simplify, simplify, simplify!

And the Chinese Taoist philosopher Lao Tzu said:

Simple in actions and in thoughts, you return to the source of being.

But in this day and age, technology can sometimes make life more complicated than ever. Here's today's mission, to make the technology work for us, not against us.

The 0.07 commitment

Spend 0.07 per cent of your day ensuring that you approach it in the right manner and stick to your goal of simplifying and doing one thing at a time. (0.07 per cent of your day = one minute. That’s not much is it?)

  1. Before you start the important and productive part of your day (work, errands, meetings, looking after children), sit for one uninterrupted minute.
  2. Write a brief plan for when you are going to ‘do emails’. For instance, ‘I will check emails at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.’ Or, ‘I will check email when I arrive at work, at lunchtime, and before I leave.’
  3. Write down a separate time for personal web-surfing. For instance, ‘I will do personal web stuff between 8 and 9 p.m. tonight. For the rest of the day, I’ll use the web for work only.’ (1 minute to make plan = 0.07% of the day)

It’s as simple to simplify as that. Once you’ve made the plan, and written it down, you’re more likely to stick to it, and less likely to find yourself stalking your ex's best friend's new puppy on facebook.

Competition

This blog is undergoing a bit of a rebrand. In light of my books, Confidence in a minute, Relax in a minute, and Persuade in a minute, it seems silly not to have a blog devoted to self-development ideas that take a minute or less. Duh! But what to call it?  Thus far, I've come up with;

The one-minute blog: self development ideas that take a minute or less.

But can you think of something better?  Snappier?  If I pick your suggestion, then you'll win five best-selling self-help audiobooks.  Any ideas?

Cheers,

Tony
