What Marcus Aurelius and Ping Pong have in common
There's a point to all this!
I'm pretty sure this is the first time ever that Marcus Aurelius and the sport of Ping Pong have appeared on the same page. Let's see if we can make it work.
Last weekend was a good one. One of the most enjoyable things I've ever done at work was (trying to) play ping pong and (trying to) present at the same time. I'm not sure I did either particularly well but it was a lot of fun having a go. (Click below if you want to see this.)
Ping pong experts will note that I stuck firmly to a pretty timid backhand.
Anyway, after 4 five hour shows over the weekend I had the Monday morning off and was ready for a good old rest. I was determined to do very little. But for some reason I've recently been reading up on Marcus Aurelius (Roman Emperor from 161 to 180 - obviously you knew that right?).
As well as the small matter of ruling an empire, he was a celebrated philosopher and wrote what he called his 'Meditations'. And on that quiet Monday morning after a long weekend of work, reading his meditations made me get off my backside and make the very most of the day.
Marcus Aurelius. Roman Emperor with good hair.
“When you arise in the morning think of what a privilege it is to be alive, to think, to enjoy, to love.”
“The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts.”
“You have power over your mind - not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.”
“Dwell on the beauty of life. Watch the stars, and see yourself running with them.”
The truth is, the only thing that Marcus Aurelius and Ping Pong have in common is that they've appeared in a blog together (this one). But I hope you enjoy the quotes, and for more you can go here.
Have an excellent week, and maybe even allow yourself a moment to dwell on the beauty of life.
