The strange link between penalty shoot-outs and your mobile phone

The strange link between penalty shoot-outs and your mobile phone

What are you reading this on right now? And how are you standing/sitting? What's your posture?

There's a tenuous world cup link to this week's blog - but let's not talk about England, eh?

I recently heard the hunched posture that people have when they check their mobile phone described as 'the posture of failure'. Looking down, head facing downwards with shoulders hunched forwards - yes, this is the universally acknowledged posture of defeat. If you want more proof, then during this World Cup check out the posture of the players who miss in a penalty shoot-out.

Given that we all spend hours every day eagerly hunched over our devices, then we might start to ask ourselves how spending hours in this posture of failure affects the way that we feel? The mind/body connection is quite profound and we should take this seriously. Some reports suggest we check our phones up to 150 times a day  That's potentially a lot of bad posture.

I found this quite thought provoking so I delved in a bit more. Guess what - it turns out that the ever-increasing army of mobile phones we own is acknowledged to be causing increasing numbers of neck problems. I never knew this, but there's now a name for it. Oh yes. "Text Neck". Read this for more on Text Neck.

So what is the opposite? What is the 'posture of success'? (I'm not sure if the posture of success is an actual thing but you know what I mean). How would we feel if we put our devices away more often, and held ourselves in the 'posture of success'. And how would that make us feel? Just asking the question. Maybe the answer is to a) leave the device in the pocket a bit more, and b) hold the device up really high when we read it, which is more comfy, but I can confirm attracts some very strange looks.
