[1 minute self-development] Since we've been talking about new year's resolutions over the past week or so, let me tell you about one of mine.

For a while now, I've felt I'm spending too much time in front of screens. Don't get me wrong, digital technology is awesome, and means I can spend a day happily working from a coffee shop or sofa. But it can go too far. Increasingly, the first thing I did in the morning was check my iPhone. Not necessary. During the day, I'd often find myself needlessly scrolling through Twitter/Facebook/emails when I could have been doing something - anything - more constructive.

So myself and previously mentioned friend Matt are currently depriving ourselves of being 'connected' for a two hour window daily. Just switching off for two hours - small steps at first and then we might increase it. No phones, emails, texts, or internet, for two hours daily. After the two hours is up, we can return to looking at interesting pictures of food on instagram, or whatever it is we choose to do. Oh, and the other part of our 'digital deal' is to not check the iPhone before breakfast. (I know for some people this will seem ludicrous, but others will know exactly what I'm talking about).

To ensure we complete this, we've made a monetary commitment to each other. Every day we don't follow the digital deal, we owe £10 ($15). We've been using a cool website called stickK.com (developed by Yale University professors) to help us with this.

Two things for you to think about this week.

  1. Could a bit of daily digital downtime help you? Are there things that you love but don't find enough time to do? Read a book, walk, run, work out, just look out of the window. Or even sleep more?
  2. Could a 'monetary' commitment help with your goal? As the Yale University professors say, incentives get people to do things.

I'm finding it is working really well. I feel clear-headed in the morning, I'm enjoying the two-hour windows loads, and I'm sticking to it because I don't want to part with my hard-earned.
