A quiet, productive Monday
By the end of the day you’ll have sent fifty emails, made fifteen phone calls, watched TV, listened to the radio and your iPod, surfed your favourite websites, used apps, sent texts, and even crammed in some work (if you’re lucky.) Is it any wonder that life can sometimes be a bit too much? The way to cope in this age of information overload is by reducing stressful distractions, so you can relax and get more done. So today...
- Change your email signature. “Today I’m answering emails at 10am and 4pm. If you want to get hold of me quicker, please phone me.”
- Only have three windows open at any one time on your computer. That includes email, work documents, internet pages (and separate tabs within one browser), Skype, iTunes, and yes, fantasy football too.
- Put headphones on. You’ll be amazed at how much more productive you get, as people don’t interrupt you at work when you have headphones on. Make sure the lyrics help you to relax too – think Bill Withers’ Lovely Day, rather than Daniel Powter’s Bad Day.
- At a particularly stressful moment; go outside, take deep breaths and count backwards from the number 20,000 for one minute. Like this: 20,000. 19,999, 19,998. If you lose your place or get the numbers wrong, go back to 20,000 and start your minute again. The harder you find it to do for a full minute, the more stressed you are and the more you probably need this.
