[New Year's Resolutions 2] Actually doing them

[New Year's Resolutions 2] Actually doing them

Let's be honest. Most of us scribble out all kinds of New Year's Resolutions, but how often do we actually get them done. Some people don't even get as far as scribbling them out. For many, those resolutions stick around as long as the hangover on New Year's Day. Well I don't know about you, but my hangover's (just about) gone now. So it's time to make sure that in 2012 we actually achieve our New Year's Resolutions, rather than just talk about them.

Building 'The Big Mo'

Achieving goals is all about momentum (or 'Big Mo' as I call it). Lots of people have big goals. But the ones who achieve them make sure they achieve those little, small, daily goals that build into Big Mo - making sure the little things you do each day start to build. Actually, it’s amazing how few people appreciate this. Because it’s all very well saying you’re going to earn a million dollars, or win more tennis matches, or find a partner, or indeed fly to the moon, but unless you do the day-to-day stuff effectively, you won’t build momentum towards your goal and it’ll seem as far away as ever.

  • Focus on doing something towards your goal every day, and then writing down what you did at the end of the day. That way you notice the momentum building.

Sharing is caring

Here's one way of getting the day-to-day stuff done. Dr. Gail Matthews, a researcher in California, investigated goal-setting and sharing. Her study suggests that if you share your goals with a friend and then send them weekly updates, you are 33 per cent more likely to achieve them.

Dr. Robert Cialdini (persuasion guru – worth googling) agrees that commitments are even more effective when they are public.

So share your goal with a friend, and give them weekly updates. Even better - make them daily if that's cool with them. And give them full permission to give you hell if you don't stick to your plan.

But we can do even better than that.

Specifically for 2012, I’ve registered the web domain www.bigmo.biz so you can tell the world about your big goal. Just as Dr. Gail Matthews and Dr. Robert Cialdini say – make it public.

You can come to that page and enter your goal now, and it'll be there for all to see. (Of course your last name and contact details will be private). This is simply to tell the world about your goal.

Come and see what crazy goals other people have come up with – and enter your own!

As the research shows, once you've announced your goal at bigmo.biz, you're more likely to achieve it. This is just the start of your journey.  Enjoy it.
