The Success Equation (featuring Apple, Virgin and Facebook)

[1 minute self development] Okay, it's time to bring together everything I've blogged about over the last month; the goal-setting, the psychological power of written commitments, raising the stakes, the Bruce Lee Test, and so on.

I think there's an even more important factor than any of the above. Because it's not the most talented who achieve the most, or rise the fastest. It's not the most gifted or those with the most degrees who are most successful. It simply tends to be those who work the hardest.

'Success' of course can be measured in many different ways, but there are long lists of interesting high achievers who flourished from non-conventional beginnings. For example; Richard Branson (left school at 16 - too busy starting businesses, working hard, making money and having fun in the process.) Whole Foods founder John Mackey (dropped out of uni but worked hard to learn the organic food trade from the bottom up), Mark Zuckerberg (dropped out of Harvard - too busy working hard on Facebook) and Steve Jobs (called the decision to drop out of college 'the best decision I ever made'. Continued his education his way, and had the most renowned work ethic of the lot.)

So here's my Success Equation.

Success = Hard Work and, er, that's it.

Whether success to you means making millions, bringing up great kids, running a marathon in under 4 hours, starting a new business, anything - it seems to me that hard work is the important bit.

Success = Hard Work and, er, that's it.

Certainly, the one thing that seems to bind the above examples is a dogged tenacity in the pursuit of their goals.

Have a good week, work hard, and, er, that's it.

Tony.
