The Happiness Equation (and a Royal Baby)
Ah, the magic of a royal baby. This week here in Britain we are apparently 'the happiest we've been since 1976', because of sunshine, the royal baby, and Andy Murray's tennis success. Yes, according to the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy: Sunshine + royal baby + Andy Murray's tennis success = happiness* (*if you are British.)
Okay, I very slightly paraphrased the good psychologists of the BACP there, but you get the message. People are easily pleased. So how can you recreate the happiness equation if you're not British, or the next time there's not a royal baby to cheer you up?
Here's my revised happiness equation you can use all year round.
Invent a cloud-seeding machine to ensure sunshine at all times + find a local royal that might consider having a baby + sponsor your neighbour to be really good at tennis = er, happiness.
Yeah. it doesn't work does it. Truth is, I'm pretty sure there's not a failsafe way to guarantee happiness for everyone. But if you are stuck in a bit of a rut, try this. It's worked for me a couple of times when I've felt in need of a boost.
- At the end of today, make a list of 5 great things about your day. During the day pay particular attention to everything that might make it onto the list.
In The Secret they call this gratitude. The relationship between happiness and appreciating what you've got is definitely worth exploring, as numerous studies show those who actively express gratitude are more satisfied and optimistic about their lives.
Besides, taking action and getting into appreciation mode might work a lot quicker than waiting around for another royal baby.
