The mind is like a parachute...

Returning this week to one of my fave quotes, from Frank Zappa. "The mind is like a parachute. It works best when open."

So with your parachute mind open - let's glide down to this week's technique. As always, it's inspired by the simple effective skills of NLP

'Rest easy’ is adapted from what is known as the Betty Erickson Technique. Betty Erickson was the wife of a distinguished hypnotist called Dr Milton H. Erickson. Betty was a great in her own right though, because this is a good way to make quick changes.

It works because you are floating into a completely altered state by fully occupying the mind. You’re drifting into a state of concentration that is so full-on it effectively relaxes the brain.

  • Be still. Notice three things that you can see. Go slowly, concentrating on every one.
  • Notice three things that you can hear. Again, go slowly.
  • Now notice three things that you can feel or touch. For example, it might be the temperature of the air, the seat against your back, the feeling of your legs on the ground.
  • Continue this process, now focusing on three things you can see, three you can hear and three you can feel. Make it different things that you notice each time. (1 minute)

(If you’re finding this challenging and the only thing you can hear is, for example, the lawnmower outside, focus on the differences in tone and volume within the lawnmower noise. Is the lawnmower slightly quieter than it was a moment ago? What different tones can you hear within the lawnmower sound? It’s important that you search for three different sights/sounds/feelings every time, but the changes can be very slight.)

Keep going for a full minute. Enjoy the chance to float into a minute of quiet time. Keep your focus. Your parachute is well and truly open.
