What does this strange morning coffee ritual have to do with high performance?
If you count out exactly 60 beans for your morning coffee every single day, will it make you a high performer? Probably not, although this strange ritual worked for Beethoven. However when we start to investigate how great minds make time, find inspiration, and get to work, it turns out patterns emerge. Patterns that we can we emulate.
The rituals of great minds are the subject of a book which comes out this week. In previews - it sounds absolutely fascinating.
What is significant for us - looking to be high performers in our own lives - is that a series of patterns emerge. One of the principles of NLP is to 'do what works'. And it turns out a surprising number of exceptional creative talents and achievers from past and present apparently do these things:
- Get up early.
- Keep the day job (or work creatively for only a limited time per day).
- Take lots of walks.
- Stick to a schedule.
- Drink lots of coffee (!)
- Work from anywhere.
I'm not sure I'd recommend all the advice from these creative whizzes. Celebrated film-maker Ingmar Bergman for example, ate a "strange whipped sour milk and jam concoction" every single day for lunch. Every day. Hmmm. And Freud's wife put his toothpaste on his toothbrush every day to save him time. Good luck finding someone to do that for you!
The 'lots of walks' section is particularly interesting - Tchaikovsky believed he had to take a walk of exactly two hours a day. And sticking to a schedule and getting up early was also interesting to me - my daily routine varies so I'll need to find a workaround for that one.
