Why making your screensaver green will improve your mood
[1 minute self-development] The weather's getting better and spring is finally here. (In the northern hemisphere of course - 85% of my mailing list/blog readers have spring right now, if you're lucky enough to live in a beautiful Southern Hemisphere country and be reading this, how was summer!?)
Now listen up, because I'm going to tell you something really important here: Make sure you get out and appreciate some nature in the next few weeks.
There's loads of research that suggests if you do this, you'll be happier, healthier and more productive. Turns out we were made to appreciate the natural world around us.. not sit in stuffy windowless, airless rooms all day long.
But there's even more than that. Experts now believe that even if you just have a view of nature, you'll feel better. Author Oliver Burkeman lays out the evidence in stunning detail:
- In a university building, workers on the greenery side took 19% fewer sick days.
- Pupils do worse in tests in windowless classrooms.
Hospital patients are discharged quicker when they're in a room with a view
And if you really can't stir yourself to move more than a few feet and stagger over to the window, at least change your screensaver to something green. WHAT!?
- Simply looking at a green picture for a couple of seconds leads to improvements in creativity.
That's crazy isn't it? The evidence is here.
For inspiration, simply google green screensavers. I've changed mine to the image above. And I have to say, it does feel good to look at it. But I'm heading outside as that's definitely better. So enjoy your week.
